We're excited to announce a partnership with Bilkompani and Kalmar Energi to launch the first commercial Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) deployment in Sweden. Together, we're proving that electric vehicles aren't just transportation, they're distributed energy assets that can actively reduce electricity costs for property owners.
Bilkompani: Sweden's First Car Dealer with V2X
Bilkompani, a Kalmar-based car dealer and service centre representing Volkswagen, Audi, and Skoda, has become the first car dealership in Sweden to install V2X technology. Their facility now uses bidirectional charging to manage the building's power consumption in real time.
What makes this particularly interesting is that Bilkompani can now demonstrate V2X directly to their customers. When someone comes in to look at an EV, they can see the technology in action on-site, making V2X tangible rather than theoretical.
This is exactly the kind of forward-thinking partnership that makes V2X real. Not as a concept, but as a working solution in an actual commercial building.
"We want to be at the forefront and not just talk about electrification, but actually show what's possible." — Marcus Eliasson, CEO, Bilkompani
How It Works
Our software monitors the property's electricity consumption in real time. When the EV charges, the system controls the process intelligently to flatten consumption peaks across the building. When consumption risks exceeding critical threshold levels, the EV battery temporarily supports the facility, functioning as a load balancer for the property.
The system is designed to protect the vehicle's battery. Based on our simulations, approximately one peak per day requires management, totalling roughly 200 hours annually of battery support. That's a fraction of the battery's capacity, carefully managed to preserve longevity.
Why This Matters Now
Commercial properties have long paid demand charges based on their highest consumption peaks. Now, similar tariffs are rolling out to residential customers in Kalmar Energi's network, and across Sweden. From January 1, 2027, all grid operators in Sweden will be required by law to charge demand-based fees. These demand charges mean property owners no longer pay just for how much electricity they use, but also for how much they use at the same time. For properties with uneven consumption patterns, this can significantly increase costs.
"Demand charges are a necessary tool for a more sustainable grid, but innovation is the key to real change." — Per-Martin Carlsson, Head of Marketing, Kalmar Energi
V2X changes the equation. An electric vehicle that's parked during the day can cover these peaks, lowering the demand charge without the owner having to change their behaviour.
"An EV isn't just a means of transportation. It can actually lower your electricity costs." — Fredrik Ahlgren, CEO, Sourceful Labs AB
The numbers back this up. A single EV can shave peaks of up to 11 kW, which translates to savings of around 800 SEK per month.
A Win-Win for Grid and Customer
The grid operator needs this technology to relieve pressure on the grid. Property and homeowners can use it to reduce their costs. We're connecting these systems so that it works seamlessly for both sides.
"From a grid operator perspective, it's valuable when companies take initiative and drive this kind of innovation. The entire electricity market needs solutions like these if we're going to manage the energy transition." — Per-Martin Carlsson, Head of Marketing, Kalmar Energi
What's Next
This pilot is a stepping stone. The biggest challenge right now? Two worlds that need to meet. The automotive industry and the energy industry operate on different timelines, with different regulations and priorities. Bridging that gap takes time, but collaborations like this one show it's possible.
Kalmar is an underdog in this space, and that's exactly what makes it exciting.
We're expanding our V2X-compatible EMS to support more hardware and more use cases, and the opportunity is now opening up for more property owners in the Kalmar region to try the technology. If you're an energy company, installer, or property owner interested in V2X, get in touch.
